"Nice menu with plenty of choice - Pie & Mash is their weapon of choice, apparently folk come from far and wide for it! 2 of our group had it and suitably impressed... one of us had the haddock & chips and it really did look like a whale, remaining 2 had the custom made burger... which was one of the best burgers I've had for a while."

A short history of the Dispensary
From the mid-18th century medical dispensaries were established to bring health care to the poorest areas of East London. Members subscribed as little as one penny a week for adults and a halfpenny a week for each of their children. This was seen as a suitable arrangement for working-class people who wanted to be provident and self-reliant, avoiding charitable treatment offered to 'paupers', but with no hope of paying the kind of fees normally charged by doctors, dentists or midwives to their wealthier patients. The services ranged from provision of medicines to dentistry and midwifery, with many patients being treated at home. One of the first, the London Dispensary, developed into the London Hospital. Slightly later, the Eastern Dispensary, Leman Street was founded in 1782 by doctors in the City but the present building erected in 1858-9 from voluntary contributions. Designed by GH Simmonds, a local surveyor and the dispensary's secretary and built by John Jacobs of Leman Street. Repaired and refurbished as a pub by Ronald S Hore 1997-8. Its appearance is mannered Italianate. The interior of the Dispensary has recently been refurbished with award-winning interior designer, Jackie McWeeney, commissioned to update the property.
